French’s writing is hypnotic, dialogues sound so natural I can hear the Irish accent in my head. Disclosure: I’m the same age as Frank Mackey, listened to the same music and, in a country so close and yet so different that it all eerily feels like a parallel universe. And I likely entertained the very same dreams.

The first storyline is well written, has stunning art, and yet it feels like pretentious crap. Luckily still 400 pages to go.

This is the most boring book I read all year. Possibly in years. Why is this a classic? Perhaps a classic of the pointlessly whimsical and futile...
