Elyse Black is reading Today Will Be Different
Loved this book. Funny and heartfelt. But, I couldn't help wondering why all of the "great" novels I've been recommended lately have been about the problems of wealthy white people. Just an observation...this was still a highly enjoyable read.

Elyse Black is reading The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country
A great little book. Russell is humorous, honest, and thorough in her examination of life in Denmark. I laughed out loud several times while reading this but also felt that she took her work (finding out what makes Danes happy) very seriously.

Elyse Black is finished with Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman
An extremely ambitious work which at times could have been edited a bit for length, it is nevertheless a fascinating portrayal of one of the most influential women in the history of European politics. Catherine becomes a real woman through her own words and the inclusion of hundreds of other primary source references.

Already a riveting memoir. Nafisi is an excellent narrator of the complexities of Iranian society.

My first "book on CD," and I'm enjoying it. Plus, the kids are learning Russian history in the car.

Elyse Black is on page 140 of 338 of Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference
Wonderfully written book. It can at times verge on an exhaustive critique of current literature on gender differences, but then the author's sense of humor shines through. Throughout, the author's point is clearly made: Gender bias/discrimination is still with us and we must not allow ourselves to make pseudoscientific excuses for inaction against it.

Elyse Black is reading Fates and Furies
An exercise in intellectual self-satisfaction by the author. The only reason this book was so highly praised by NPR was its unchecked pretentiousness. This was a realistic portrait of a marriage if all the marriages you know are between wealthy, pretentious New Yorkers. I found it wholly unbelievable and struggled to sympathize with any of the characters.
