Am trying to take this in small bites to make this delicious book last until Monday when my order of the next two are supposed to arrive in the mail..and failing. I have no willpower.

Alternative history that posits somehow the expansionist Roman Empire did not see the global cooling off period or have supply chain issues or numerous political issues that led to their downfall and continued just growing and growing into the 1200 A.D.

This one follows a failed expedition conquest of North America and the capture and Stockholm Syndrome conversion of a Roman Praetor.

So far an interesting premise of AI takeover dystopia.. but avoiding the extremes “ all robots are evil” from the Terminator and the “ all robots are good” from either Asimov or Asher.

This author posits that with intelligence comes all the foibles of regular humans, but given the natural advantages a super intelligent AI has along with an internet tech dependent society, they naturally takeover.

SPACE OPERA.. basically the hard Sci Fi equivalent to EPIC fantasy.
The action does not revolve around one character but three or four.
It takes place on multiple worlds and is at least part of a trilogy but usually a 5 book series. Lots of political intrigue and dramatic layers for depth.

OK so far.. if you can ignore the preposterous idea that ALL humans in a galaxy spanning civilization would go Vegan.. and that a professional xenobiologist when witnessing a carnivore hunting and killing a herbivore..would automatically try to intervene to “ save” the poor herbivore from the evil beady eyed predator??

of the female gender as more “ soft hearted” hasn’t aged well from the 70s

Starting out I notice the intro talks about his “ Ill health”.. but I notice he lived into his 70s.. upon a quick google it looks like the best guess is Crohn’s disease.. ( other less popular theories are Chagas’ disease or lactose intolerance.)

Only complaint so far is the length. This should really be a 350 page collection for $30.00… instead it is 5 or 6 installments at $15.99 ea ($70 some for a set).
With large font and spacing to stretch this installment to 145 pages..would be barely 90 in regular font.
They have my money already…no willpower.

So far my only complaint is that while I love the story so far feel like I am buying it in short installments for $15.99 ea
145 pages and with the larger font and spacing I think this would come in under 100 pages if it were in the tinier print in most paperbacks.
So essentially I will pay $70 to get the normal full length book I would want(with the quality of the writing they probably will get that much from me )

Having trouble categorizing this in any kind of genre.
It could be fantasy as it is set in some mythical world vaguely based of of Asian historical periods..most fantasy alludes to some mythical European kingdom that never existed..

BUT hard to pin down the actual “ magical” aspect
We will see if I can tease out the symbolism …or just give up and call this speculative fiction with Psionic powers.

DNF… and not sure if I ever will.
