Eight of these! What a nice long story.

This one is better than the first because everything's set up, and there's a lot going on!

Thoroughly enjoying this. I like having different readers, and I like the readers.

had to stop — finally got a copy of the book club book!

Well, so far I've got a floor plan of her whole neighborhood, street by street. I'm ready for something to happen.

It got good at 30%. I'm in shock at what happened.

I don't think you're supposed to read this book in big chunks at a time. It feels like poetry you're supposed to read in snippets.

Vera is so fun and refreshing!

I started this one before reading the first book — I highly DON'T recommend that! I was lost in the list of characters. Who the heck were all these people? Now that I know them all, I love them and am so glad to be with them again, especially Vera.

I'm irritated by hearing what each character thinks and feels—in great detail—after someone says every line of dialogue. It makes the story go so slowly. But. The story's really good, and I want to know what happens! The idea is such a funny one: a bossy Chinese lady wants to solve a murder. I've upped the playback speed!

Holy moly.

This book! All day, all I want to do is get back to it!

When I suggested this for our cruise readaloud last week, John said, "a Jesus book?"

I'm finally interested. It's like a mystery, a puzzle you have to fit together, gathering clues from these people's thoughts. Yes, thoughts. Everything is stream of consciousness, no narrator so far. You have to concentrate because you never know when a clue will jump out. This guy is thinking along one track, then suddenly jumps to the past, to the thing that happened, the thing we're curious about.

How do you stop reading a book that is "the most difficult but also most beautiful Faulkner novel." =/

Still trudging through.

Started this in Singapore! It's fascinating content, but skimmable. I've sorta lost interest, having gotten enough goodie, and there's nothing that makes me curious enough to keep going.

Oh, what a trudge! But how do you stop reading when it's "Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century." I do like the stream of consciousness, and that we'll get to see from three perspectives, but gosh, it's taking so looooooong and getting (seemingly) nowhere!

cont'd: More than anything in the world, the procurator loathed the smell of rose oil, and everything now pointed to a bad day since that smell had been pursuing him since dawn.

Listen to this first couple of sentences of Chapter 2: Early in the morning on the fourteenth day of the spring month of Nissan, wearing a white cloak with a blood-red lining and shuffling with his cavalry man's gait into the roofed colonnade that connected the two wings of the palace of Herod the Great, walked the procurator of Judea, Pontius Pilate. Man, she IS like Chekov. That first story is a DOOZY. She definitely understands the nature of man.

It's exactly like Summer Lightning! Two couples getting engaged to someone else to spite each other. An old man helping them with strategies. Someone trying to steal the pig. Lady Constance being funny. A strange secretary who ends up plotting. Still so much fun!
