Almost done with Volume I. From Sumeria to Egypt, Babylonia to Assyria, Judea to Persia, a tour of India and currently China with Taoist ideas that sound almost libertarian.
None of these civilizations seem so far away and each adds enrichening context to today. The portions on Egypt, Assyria, Persia, and China have been my favorite so far. Thebes in particular feels towering and timeless. A different life; not old.
