I find it disingenuous to say a book is for everyone when Carrellas has an incurious prejudice against monogamy and a hatred of marriage so strong that the thought of participating in a wedding-as-art made her burst into tears.

I would certainly try not to judge anyone for their choice to engage in consensual nonmonogomy, but Carrellas seems to be in denial that having multiple partners is a risk-factor for increased instances of STIs. Saying the only risk “is the courage to take the next logical step in your erotic evolution.” Good grief.

Maybe I’m just a prude, but the author really lost credibility for me describing the 60s and 70s as the golden age of sexual freedom (the very same way the far-right idolizes the sexism and patriarchy of the 40s & 50s) as if sexual harassment and discrimination against LGBT and people of color wasn’t rampant, and glossing over the human toll of the horror of the AIDS epidemic.

If I had a buckle for every time amplified audio recordings of insects mating were mentioned in this book, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it is weird that it happened twice.

For the record, I was in the Supernatural fandom when /Wincest/ was the most popular ‘ship—and I found it DEEPLY uncomfortable that an actor would secretly (not read) write & publish explicit fan fiction about the character they portray. I want to love this book, but please tell me I wasn’t the only one squicked out by the thinly veiled harpy insert…

I wonder is this what I sound like to other people when I talk. And if so, how did I get this way without smoking pot?

A dramatic reading of The Crossover might not initially lead you to believe it was about basketball...
