Excellent historical rendering of the facts brought to life with in depth interviews, personal histories, correspondence between soldiers and family back home. Informative and enjoyable as all Sir Max Hastings reads are.

Historically accurate with very good plausibility in characters and their mannerisms.

This is a book my mother obtained in 1963 and I pulled from her library last year along with other books by Danish author Dinesen. Published around 1940 it was a book to please a reader with time available to enjoy the most vivid character development and scenery descriptions. Usually the settings were of “the last century “ and some relation or critique of a privileged class whether those arriving or leaving it.

Very good, incredibly descriptive of the 19th century gentry and court attendees in Denmark
