The bit with Susan and Ben looking at the lights on in the upper floor of the Marsten house from separate parts of town is really spooky while also being completely mundane. Great bit of writing.

In the home stretch. Back half of the book way more uneven than the first half, but the main beats are really good, throwing more than a few curveballs at your expectations.

Doing that fantasy novel thing of taking shortcuts to move plot and character development along now. Before the attack on the Cumbraelin keep this book felt very organic and authentic. Less so in this section.

Extremely readable so far, but again one of those fantasies that takes forever to get to its hook, opting for world building instead. Thankfully, Ryans’s world building is extremely breezy and deft, opting for showing instead of telling.

Might back burner this to read something different. But it’s still helpful to look at some speculation at Capital’s reaction to a Bernie Presidency.

My friends are all reading smart or off beat books while I’ve only got the energy for Masculine Brain Movies

This series is pretty basic pulp military SF, but as someone with student loans the central premise is incredibly cathartic

It’s hard to keep plugging away at this because it’s structured so far as a Long Journey Where Stuff Happens, which is always a structure that loses me. There’s some noir flavor that I like, but I think the focus on Tracker’s perspective kind of hurts the momentum of the story, which combines a detective story with a weird epic fantasy, which should be something I can’t get enough of.

It’s long and feels long 😕

Off to a good start with this one. Has already delivered on the samurai and spooky ghost lore fronts 👻

Mainlining brain candy genre fiction to get my book count for the year up, but I feel like counting full series runs of comics by just logging the first trade up compensates for not breezing through harder books

Things are certainly picking up. Very brisk and fun writing as well. The ruthless pirate captain is a hoot.

Enjoying this, but ready to be done with the basic training segment. I get why it’s there but I just want to get on to the main show.

First section of this book is... I guess not cathartic, but very identifiable and I hope that the main guy gets to exact some justice down the line
