Lucy is whisked out of NY to Maine by ex husband William, as he sees the pandemic coming, while she is completely oblivious. We then observe them and their family members and all the dynamics during this period where not everyone is aligned or shares same perspectives and where growth needs to occur.

'What I have lost and cannot find I remember. What I cannot see I attempt to call. Working on a string of impulses, bordering illumination.'

'I'm going to remember everything and then I'm going to write it all down. An aria to a coat. A requiem for a café. That's what I was thinking, in my dream, looking down at my hands.'

'We seek to stay present, even as the ghosts attempt to draw us away. Our father manning the loom of eternal return. Our mother wandering toward paradise, releasing the thread. In my way of thinking, anything is possible. Life is at the bottom of things and belief at the top, while the creative impulse, dwelling in the centre, informs all.'

This is so good, utterly compelling. Picked it up at a second hand booksale, starting reading, can not put it down. It's a meandering read, both of mind and of travel and literary references grounded by the ever present need to sit with a coffee, notebook and join dots between dreams, reality, ideas, people, places, memories, portals, giving talks, progessing projects whether that's an old house or a 100 line poem.

Patti Smith has a morning ritual in a local cafe, black coffee, brown toast, olive oil, a corner table. From this place, she recalls a night dream, the cowboy, then a daydream, a beach cafe, then narrates a memory of visiting Suriname to collect stones from an old prison Jean Genet did not stay in.
Already mesmerised by the serene transition from one story to another, through fearless curiosity, coffee reflections.

A bank robbery goes wrong, a real estate open home gets disrupted by a bank robber trying to escape and a bunch of people including the policemen investigating the crime have multiple different connections between them that they are not aware. From the apartment balcony they can see a bridge, also significant.

Many of the characters have signs of anxiety disorders, OCD, borderline personality.

A young mother needs only a few thousand dollars support to enable her to keep her child, while prospective parents pay an agency $55,000 and get a $15,000 tax credit.
"Mothers are looking for care.
Agencies are looking for supply "

A deeply corrupt and shameful process that has morphed into something equally despicable as it ever was.
