There are certain times when it is appropriate to drop everything you are supposed to be doing and get into bed with your new book.

Sometimes I like to pick up a book with the intention of understanding why people like it so much, a way to connect with others and be a part of the species. But I'm worried this one may turn my stomach, and I'm prepared to take it in small doses with heavy respites into other, murkier stories.

I came at this tome worried it would be a chore to finish. My big summer project. But, no - Freedom is sheer delight, and I'm blowing through it rapidly. Finish tomorrow or Tuesday.

While finishing the plaintive, sweet, nostalgic Gilead, I decided it was a good time to read, as a way to offset the treacle, the trashiest and goriest novel in my possession, complete with a severed head on the cover.

Featured as one of the novels in the "Great American Read," I'm going to give this one a look.

I wanted to read another book this summer from the author of The Great Believers, Rebecca Makkai!
