Hi, quick lesson on propaganda vs art, my friends. If a book has a character that voices some opinion (i.e. sex is biological, gender is something some chooses”) and then no other character voices any other opposing or refining perspective? That’s propaganda! It’s not just when a British person wants a closer look at something!

If it were just that Mimi was condescending about childbearing/choosing to keep a child that would be fine. I like books that have frank explorations about the consequences of bearing and raising children at various times of life. But the book itself treats children like they're roadblocks–especially when you're Really Gifted.

Too much needless stuttering. Save it for when characters are nervous, not every other page!

This is one of those books that should have been a movie instead. Or 200 pages shorter.

Yeah, this book is weird. Its kind of weirdness is reminiscent of two other books, both of which coincidentally also feature birds: SUMMER AND BIRD and MAGONIA.

"The three of them stood looking at one another. "Raymie felt something expanding inside of her. It felt like a gigantic tent billowing out. "This, Raymie knew, was her soul." This is already a massive change of pace from IN COLD BLOOD. Much more cheery. Much more hopeful.

"Ceaseless arising and passing away is what we experience as time and being. They are not separate. They are one thing, and in even a fraction of a second, we have the opportunity to choose, and to turn the course of our action either toward the attainment of truth or away from it. Each instant is utterly critical to the whole world."
