the "plot" consists of the same 3 scenes repeated over and over and over again. coal gets mad at his dad, he thinks about what a loser he is, he has weirdly exaggerated tension with hex, he gets mad at his dad again, thinks about what a loser he is... and i fear we're gonna be stuck in this perpetual loop until the end of the book

this book is soooo boring. 2h in and we're still in the middle of a lengthy info dump about the hierarchies and power structures of this universe. a silly little romcom does NOT require this epic fantasy level of extensive worldbuilding. not a single thing has happened so far aside from pages upon pages of self-loathing word vomit from our protagonist.

the biggest suffering they've put katniss through might just be this stupid love triangle. it's physically painful to read about her interactions with gale

i had almost forgotten how brutal this book is. some of these scenes read like they're straight from an adult horror novel

i know we suffered through an epidemic of popular YA book-to-movie adaptations' final installments being split into two parts for no reason but i think this book at least would've benefited from it cause there's so much info dumping in the first few chapters, so many important plot points that are quickly recounted in retrospect

"i wouldn't be attracted to him but that is true of every man except for a few very specific celebrities and some fictional male characters who were written by women" i read books to ESCAPE tiktok rhetoric, not to see their exact talking points repeated in them... everyone in this room will some day be dead was so authentic and real but the relatability of this one feels almost forced

i know that plot twist shook me to my CORE back then

the forced love triangle is this series biggest flaw i fear. it made no sense for the story or katniss' character, just followed an annoying trend that every 2000s YA book had to participate in for some reason

ugh i genuinely cannot stand gale... never could never will

definitely more invested in sabine's story than alice's

the writing is a little tedious to read ngl
