I really wish I knew if Tolstoy thought the great men of history are truly great or just a figurehead for circumstances often beyond their control. I’m so far in this book and I really wish I knew that. I wonder if Tolstoy will tell me at some point.

“Never to the end of his life was he able to understand goodness, or beauty, or truth, or the meaning of his own actions, which were too much the opposite of goodness and truth, and too far removed from everything human for him to be able to grasp their meaning. He could not renounce his actions, extolled by half the world, and therefore he had to renounce truth and goodness and everything human.”

<spoiler> HOW is it simultaneously the end of the world and we are like, calling 70 year olds out of retirement and booking private jets but somehow have to still sit through a routine traffic stop with the local law enforcement????? </spoiler>
