This book is fascinating

Needed to reread. Love this book so much. Finished it a year ago and needed more.

Definitely the weakest of the series. The last 1/3 feels like an epilogue that goes on way too long. Some pretty gross transphobic nonsense too.

This book has me thinking a lot about older generations punishing younger people for stepping outside the bounds of what was acceptable during their own generation. I think that's as much as I can say without spoilers, but it definitely echos across generations in my family and the familial disapproval here feels not dissimilar from the kind I've received for being trans.

So far I like this one way more than the last two. I just got to a part that has some vaguely terfy implications to it, but I figure if I can appreciate Gene Wolfe's work despite his conservative politics bc that's not really the point of his books, I can do the same here.

Also to be fair, this part of the novel is set during the heyday of second wave feminism, so it's not like this isn't historically accurate.
