Great holiday read, Patterson certainly knows how to spin a yarn. As the story progresses there is a storyline which you know just isn't going to end well. Other than this telegraphed outcome the story unfolds well with Alex doing his best to be super detective, superdad and genuine all round good guy. It is what it is, a great read on holiday.

If,as the second book, this is not as good as the first then I really want to read the first. The plot revolves around a discovery that someone is tracking women across London and selling commute data to a clientele of seedy men. The initial reluctance of the police to take the threat seriously is overcome when a policewoman with a checkered past joins the team.

Fantastic, well written, humorous introduction to the Greek myths. Fry brings the myths to life in a way which makes them accessible to everyone and anyone with an interest. Certainly one of the best introductions to the myths I have read.

It is a while since I read Forbes as I was getting a little bored with his characters. Unfortunately this book is in the same vein with wooden characters who have not developed at all over the many books Forbes has penned. Sadly, in addition to this the plot is clumsy with little pretence at complexity. It will be a long time before I am attracted to another of Forbes' novels.

Ian is reading The Girl in the Red Coat
This is a great read with a sobering insight into what is any parents greatest fear, the loss of child. The religious overtone offers a reason for the abduction of Carmel and in my view offered an interesting twist to the story. I was really looking forward to the last chapters to read the plight of the girl in the red coat. I don't want any spoilers but I did think the end was a little underwhelming.

Fascinating read, had to dust off my maths to work through some of the additional reading but well worth it.

Ian is reading The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot
A beautifully written account of travel by foot (and boat). The book provides the history, geography and socio political history of various parts of the world with wonderful characters met en route. From eccentric wayfarers in the UK to discussions during walks in war torn Palestine the author has the ability to capture the essence of people in their environment.

It was okay, plenty of detail but the plot and interaction between characters is less than dynamic. Forsyth has written some fantastic books but I would not rate this as one of them.

This the first of Elly Griffiths' books I have read. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and characters and the plot itself is pretty good.

The plot was okay but overall a bit too much "Mills and Boon" for me. Suspending belief is one thing but these characters are simply beyond any belief.

Ian is reading Battling the Gods: Atheism in the Ancient World
An excellent account of the development of polytheistic, monotheistic religions and atheism. Certainly opened my eyes to the position of atheism in early history. Unlike Dawkins, Whitmarsh tackles the subject without taking an arrogant stance on belief but still challenges preconception.

This is a really odd read. It is difficult to empathise with any of the characters. However I enjoyed the plot and the twists.
