L picked this out from the bookmobile and it is our first true chapter book (not counting the Frog and Toad books). We read 6 chapters in one night; he just kept asking for “one more chapter.”

“When the Fleet was in at Mobile” broke my heart, in that raw and unexpected way that well-crafted noir can creep up & slap your heart.

The audiobook narration, mostly by Will Patton, is perfection. Loving that so far these lean more toward the slow burn uncanny than to barefaced horror.

Reading from the perspective of the killer for some of the chapters is cold & creeeeepy asl but this is a quick, fun noir-homage like so much of Peter Swanson.

Impossible to put down, but not for the reasons I expected.

The audiobook narration by Miranda July is divine and pitch-perfect.

Just finished and starting all over again because it’s so good and full of wisdom.

Rereading in preparation for reading James.

Time for a fun lil palate cleanser

Reading this one for the third time this year. Each time I hear something new and wonderful.

Some days I really like this book, and other days I fear it will never be over. And yet I persist!

There are moments of real truth and beauty woven into a novel that I have quite mixed feelings about so far.

Found the Shorter 14th edition in a local “little free library” and it’s just full of treasure - I’m excited.

a great collection. highlight so far:

“The Home Front” by Charles Ardai - the perfect noir story - dark and spare, with a beating heart.

5 hours of 33. It’s an excellent book, but quite brutal going sometimes. Have to rest my heart from time to time. Will be haunted by the museum scene for a long time.
