Marvelous in many ways, but wonderful words alone aren't enough to sustain my interest. It didn't seem to be going anywhere. I began to think it was all an exercise in Impressionism, and I am simply not among the Initiated. I generally have several books going at once, but when a new one attracted my attention, I put this one down and just never came back to it.,

They are simple creatures, gods, in the main, simple and easily pleased, only dangerous because men make tyhem so important.

"Fate is a bully. It feeds on the fear of what might be. It is always in our blood and psyche, waiting, preparing and perpetually fulfilling its own meaningless obsession."

By turns wistful, wise, and intensely spooky. Not your average ghost story. Proper review later.

My reading time has been a bit constrained lately, so I'm not getting through this book as fast as I'd like. But that's all right. This is a story to savor.

In some of these stories, the narrative voice sounds just like Mark Twain. Wouldn't dickens have just hated that!
