Clear, gripping prose. The paragraphs about leaving the ship were particularly well-done: a few moments show how desperate the situation is.

Reading book two in German is proving much easier than book one. A great sign that I'm making progress with German.

I'm glad this didn't win Canada Reads. For someone who is young enough that the 1970s Hockey is history, and for someone who isn't a hockey person, this book is a bit of a distancing read. So many names. So many references. I'm liking it, but not loving it.

Surprising insights keep me on my toes. Sudden zingers keep me paying attention. "Both have been pampered too long for their superstar skills; both have seen how good they can be, mistaking it for how good they are" (p 93)

So far this book has really surprised me with its opening section - what goes on in the mind of an athlete?

Strange: last time I attempted it, I found this book grim. Now I'm finding it brisk and invigorating.

I'm torn between wanting to like this book and feeling that it is distancing me from itself. I wish it was more of a memoir and less a recounting of events.

This is a book I want to 'have read' rather than a book I'm loving reading. Those book experiences are important too. Not everything can be giggles and blushes.
