Hawthorn has a Preface in the beginning about "the unprecedented excitement of the respectable community" reaction to his sketch of the Custom House. Reading it wondering what all the fuss about over this sketch made it more interesting for sure. Not sure what the fuss was about. Glad he kept it "without changing a word". Also, I just love how defiant Hester is: making her A and clothing gorgeous even in prison.

I read this book years ago in college. Recently, I finished reading Moby Dick. I was so surprised to see that Melville dedicated his novel to Hawthorne. Around the same time, I listening to a professor talk about Hawthorne's short stories and he mentioned how strange and wonderful they were. So, I'm revisiting Hawthorne and The Scarlet Letter. Curious to see if my experience of it changes after all these years.

Currently second time reading through the OSB and doing it with Orthodox sister and good friend Anna. A bit behind but currently in Joshua -which, my spiritual father -Fr. Christodoulos, calls "the a$$-kicking" book of the bible lol.
