Unbelievably great essay on Roger Federer. I've always loved him, now I understand why. Beautiful descriptions that capture the game and the man perfectly. Wallace may be the Federer of the written word. Graceful, pushing boundaries, revolutionizing his craft, eloquent, magical.

Fascinating so far.

Wow, this is a terrific book already, even though the topic is a tough one--one many people seek to avoid, which is part of Atul's point. Can't wait to keep reading...

Ok, still want to read but it really bogged down for me around page 300. Got really tired of reading EVERY DETAIL of Theo and Boris' binge drinking and drugging. Seriously. Much more intrigued with The Goldfinch painting--lost that completely.

I'm loving this book--hard to put down! Just wish I had more time right now to keep reading it.

I picked up this bk--strongly recd by the Christian ed director of my church who is also an ele ed teacher, and who has been raving about it all summer. I began it up at 9:00 on a Friday night, after a grueling week teaching h.s. English students. I was just going to get a feel for it. TWO HOURS later, I'm completely hooked. I love the five character's voices & feel for the struggles they share, Auggie's most!

I began it up at 9:00 on a Friday night, after a grueling week teaching h.s. English students. I was just going to get a feel for it. TWO HOURS later, I'm completely hooked. Franzen is clearly a gifted writer. I feel like I'm slogging through it a bit, maybe because I'm having difficulty liking/relating to/understanding the characters. However, it seems to be picking up a bit at this point, storyline-wise, and I respect Franzen's writing, so I'm not giving up hope.

Reading & discussing book month by month--so lest anyone think I'm SUCH a slow reader, it's only JULY and the book goes through December. It's fun to stretch it out. Some chpts more inspiring than others--I liked July.

Almost done. Started on way to US Open in NYC over Labor Day. Very compelling. Whole new picture of Agassi, a player who I've admired. Still admire, but see him differently.

Just getting interesting...

About 60 pages to go! I'm really interested to see how it all wraps up. A challenging but compelling read.

It's getting better, or else I'm getting the hang of it. The first class really helped. We spent an hour and a half on the "proem" (prologue)!

This book could be the death of me. The footnotes alone are killers! I've not read much George Elliot and this one is for a class, so I'm plowing on, but yikes...All those Latin, Italian and Greek references make me feel stupid.

Finished Nov. Couldn't get into HOUSEKEEPING by same author. This was more compelling.
