5 stars for the opening chapter. What a hook. Read by the author with perfect inflection. I'll update the overall book when I'm done. Right now I can barely put it down!

So disturbing! I can't put it down! The narrator is a little dry and over-enunciated, but it is nonfiction, so perhaps she's trying to read it like a report or documentary instead of like a novel. Still, the substantive material overrides this small annoyance.

My son just registered for high school. Better get my head back into that space.

I am devastated already and am only on chapter 6. Gonna tough it out though...

This was an old Reader's Choice selection. I'm enjoying it, so I'm looking forward to the 3-day weekend so I can read more!

Super funny. More risque than previous editions - not that THAT's a problem ;) I like the new arc that the characters seem to be taking since this is book 7. I appreciate that the author seems to be willing to take risks and think outside the box with her characters' stories.

Chapter 38...holy crap.

You know that feeling you get when you are listening to an audiobook, it's getting really good, and then you switch to the book later on at work and actually realize how close to the end you are, and there are way too many ends to tie up, and you almost PANIC, no, CRY?!

DAMN TRILOGIES.

Still a great pace. Unfortunately, I like one-half of the characters much better than the other half. But this is still a great book. More violence, I think this may be a restricting factor in this book's success.

Great pace. It gets right to business. But it does have vaguely referenced violence. It's more graphic than Hunger Games, and does involve children. But you know me -- I'll read anything -- and I am LOVING this!

I'm interested in the irony of the slave mother quieting stoking the fires of self-worth in her daughter, while the slaveowner does everything he can to extinguish the audacity of hope in his.

How is a mother supposed to guide her extraordinary(?) child in such an environment?!

I'm as appalled at Charlotte's treatment as at the slaves'. What does this say about the patriarchy?

I'm kind of mad at Charlotte. But how can you be mad at the disrespectful behavior of a slave toward his master?

I love that we don't know who the bad guy is. Everyone we think might be a bad guy, turns out to not be so bad. Some people we didn't even consider, might be really scary!
