Why do so many fantasy characters have to be the most gorgeous people you’ve ever seen, AND effortlessly talented at everything they do even though they have barely been alive? It really isn’t doing any favors to my childhood insecurities of being very plain and nerdy looking AND very mediocre and never actually having a talent even throughout the rest of my life. We don’t even get a plain but genius sidekick :/

They gave each type of plant in their garden a book designation then organized their garden like a library with sections like Non Fiction and History and Fiction. Omg. Already in love with this book😍💕

Holy heck, the FMC just reacted logically and rationally to the admission of a lie by the MMC because she could see he had a real struggle and was trying to do the right thing but got caught up in his emotion and didn’t know how to tell her. She understood, said “I forgive you”, and they moved on, in one conversation. No brooding about it for weeks over the course of half a book! What is this magic?? 😍

Wow, this book has just hooked me right away. So exciting and intense. Loving it so far and totally getting this for my school library. I might even play part of it for my 4th-6th graders next week since I’m listening to the audiobook. They might actually be quiet for a book like this lol.

They’ve just convinced faerie snails of the need for vengeance upon the evil former Queen by showing a snail the shell of one of their consumed brethren so they’ve all banded together in a little snail army to lead them where they need to go. I mean, come on😆 I fucking love this book, love this series, SO MUCH.

I’m on Chapter 12. This book started out SO brilliantly. Like, copying lines to save for later brilliant. But somewhere along the way the author’s narrative methods got muddled. I’m finding it difficult to understand what’s going on and who’s talking and who’s doing what in many places, like the author left stuff out or isn’t explaining properly. It’s frustrating but still good enough I’m continuing.

Not sure of page, listening to audiobook. But I have to just say: what the actual fuck dude? These gods keep totally ignoring the fact that poor Nathan is a damn CHILD who has to do what adults say and who doesn’t have complete autonomy and control over his own life. You would think that nearly immortal godlike beings who have been watching humans for millennia would understand and WANT kids to respect their elders!!

THIS is why I read so much juvenile literature: I am on page 36(!!) and already am seriously invested in all of the characters, and we have had two ninja attacks and discovered a journal with fantastic beasts a la Newt Skamander, we are about to head off for an adventure and I am having the time of my life reading this book! The only adult author that’s gotten close to this feeling is Heather Fawcett.

About 30% through on the audiobook. Man I wanted to love this book, but it is the slowest slow burn ever. Every time I think something is about to happen I get more extended descriptions of the librarian’s daily tasks and conversations. I’m just about ready to skip to the end. At least I do want to figure out what happened, but I also just really hate not knowing how stuff ends so 🤷‍♀️

So in love with this author😍 She’s putting a few verses of a poem ahead of every chapter and the first two were Emily Dickinson, and this book is inspired by Anne of Green Gables so obviously these two facts mean we are kindred spirits. Plus, ya know, the writing is effortless and beautiful and I’m already totally invested in this story. 😉

I am really enjoying this book so far. I love that this book isn’t focused on a romance, that’s so hard to find! Great world building and a unique twist on magic. Good solid voice actor for the audio version. Could easily be an adult or YA book- very clean, which is also hard to find.

Man did this book start with a whallop. I’m only on page 68 but feel like I’m on 150. It didn’t spend much time on introductions, just got right into the story, and it’s been a wild ride so far. It’s a little brutal, this one definitely isn’t one I’m going to listen to around the kids. But speaking of listen- the reader is a pro with voices. It’s been captivating overall.

So I like this author, she writes sweet, clean books that are magical and hold my attention. But the Whimbrel house books are full of people “rolling their lips together”, every chapter I swear, and it DRIVES ME NUTS. I thought she had finally stopped using this descriptor but alas, it’s in this book too- just didn’t start til halfway through :( Don’t start this author if repetitious descriptors irritate you.

I can't believe the treasure trove I've found in Gregory Maguire! He does primarily fairy tale retellings with a twist, which is a genre I absolutely adore, I'm so excited to start this first book! I hope he stands up to my expectations, because there is a lot of awesome potential in his book list.
