Okay, the first 20% didn't grab me and I have some pet peeves BUT now I'm basically constantly saying WTF and I'm having fun lol

A subtle nod to horror authors you like is great, naming every business after the last name of a different horror author is obnoxious.

So far the story is interesting but we’ve hit two of my book pet peeves: pop culture references and 30 year olds acting like that’s an ancient age where they’re so far behind if they don’t have life figured out and constantly repeating how old they are. 🫠

DNF at 45% I am so bored, I simply can’t take it anymore.

I saw a review of this that’s really sticking with me where someone didn’t like this because the main character makes dumb decisions. And they’re right, she does, but I think it’s realistic? She’s a young 20 something whose parents have died, she has a teen sister to watch out for, there’s an eviction notice, etc. she’s desperate for cash, I too would watch a weird house for 9k…

Can’t decide yet which part horrifies me the most but the fact that there’s just SO MUCH MONEY being thrown at people to sell things when most of us can barely survive is enough to make me want to BURN IT ALL DOWN.

Im really enjoying this so far but I do take a little issue with saying “they weren’t a family yet, they were a couple” come on now surely we’re at a point where people understand family is what you make it and a couple is a family… anyway there’s also a dog chapter about loving a dog and losing a dog and that was bad timing for me, didn’t expect to sob this morning.

I’m feeling like some of the reviews upset it doesn’t solely focus on her life may not have the understanding that for West Virginians the landscape, the history, the ancient mountains, and what has happened in them are part of what shapes you. These aren’t random stories, they’re why WV people are the way they are. But maybe I’m biased since I was born and raised there.

This book did not open like I expected 😅 wild first scene and I can already tell I’m going to get the ick so bad

I know it’s a classic and a lot of people get something from it but I hated every second I spent reading it and life is short.

This is giving imagine if The Grinch was hot because he literally quotes him 😂

I love how this is written, but it’s going to take a while because nonfiction sometimes makes me sleepy. 😂

I love Shirley Jackson so much. I’m wondering if my book club is liking this (it was my pick). I’m going to have to go in prepared to not be upset if they don’t. 😅

The humor is somehow dated despite being new but it’s fun so far, kind of like the show Ghosts.

Why did we decide the excellent group dynamic of Cas, Poppy, and Kieran should be gone this book? Why is Thorne, a character that did not thrill me in ruin and wrath, my favorite character in this? Oh it’s because he has Cas’ missing personality, while Cas has adopted the personality of a potato. I was looking forward to the vibes from the last two books and I don’t know what happened here. 🫠

I read a summary again because there’s something about these books I just don’t like. It makes no sense because I love From Blood and Ash so much. I just don’t relate to Sera and Ash and the writing feels different. Idk 🫠

I hate this book 🫠 anyway I’m reading a synopsis so I can DNF this a second time lol

I love this story because it's unnerving in just the weirdness. Everyone is off putting but also endearing (except the cousin). I also love Jackson's ability to make the mundane feel abnormal and how the village or the "normal" characters are the problem, and the characters who have abnormalities and/or done something wrong come across as flawed but better humans overall.

I happen to be reading this back to back with a Shirley Jackson novel and I didn't realize until right now that her writing is so similar to Jackson's. I think this is maybe why I was drawn to her stuff because Jackson is one of my favorites. It's got the same meandering vibe that makes you uneasy just because you feel like you're not moving.

This isn’t likely a forever DNF but I’m just not in the mood and this is a 14 day book at my library. 🫠

Sadly Libby took this back and I hate the audio so I’ll be waiting 12 weeks to finish it 😭

I hated Silver Elite and DNF'd it, but I deleted my actual thoughts because people cannot stop screaming at other people for negative reviews. It's an absolutely insane take that people shouldn't post negative reviews. It's also annoying to not be able to have a specific opinion without someone being upset about it, it's just a book! WE ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS! FFS.

I'm really enjoying this book, but the relationship in this is so weird. Seemingly William loves a girl he barely speaks to because honestly it seems like she was the first girl he thought was pretty? She's super weird and doesn't even seem to really like him, but they're getting married. Good plan my man.
