Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers (Vera Wong, #1)
Ummm... has anyone told
Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
it's a mystery? Also Vera Wong is clearly 90 years old, not 60-something.

Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents
Wishing I read some of the negative reviews here before I started this book, because I am agreeing much with them. So far Gibson is highly reductive, black and white, coins unnecessary terms and categories, and fails to cite any research or theories. This is very blah book.

I am not feeling Vol 2. Someone needs to be blown up soon. Also, not understanding Tolstoy's fetish for how immature and empty-minded Natasha is.

This dry "middle-aged lady goes on a leisurely pilgrimage" book has finally gotten bloody and THIRSTY, and I highly approve. You get your freak on, Ista!

The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse
At some point, I started thinking of this series as Erdrich's version of the MCU and how it's all a psychosexual soap opera with superpowers. Of course, Nanapush's superpower is talk, Agnes's is piano-playing, Lulu's is seduction. What's Leopolda's power though?

Time-wise, we've been overlapping with Tracks a lot. Wondering if I should go back and refresh myself with what happened in that novel, or if I should just embrace the Adventures of Sister "Piece of Work" Leopolda.

If Mandel cut out all this boring pre-apocalypse stuff, this book would be so much better.

Finding this read about a post-pandemic, post-collapse society strangely reassuring, if only for the fiction that the performing arts are an good career path in the post-apocalyse.

My audiobook read as I knit. Not loving the satire, which feels a little bit like Burns is shooting fish in the barrel.... 20 years after they already were smoked and eaten. Am sorta invested in what happens to Chef and Maybe-Boyfriend though (I mean, they are totally f*cking).

Vanity Fair
Becky is a man's woman because she's a clever, rapacious, and a flirt. Amelia is a man's woman because she's naive, helpless, and a devoted mother. Both are unpopular with women. I have no idea what point Thackeray is trying to make here (don't think he does either), but can I just say yay for having female friends?

George really [spoilers]kicked it[/spoilers] as soon as Amelia gained a semblance of a spine, huh. I'm pretty sure that's emblematic of something or other, but I can't be dashed enough about either of them to care.
Dobbin also remains the creepy Nice Guy.

The universe probably *would* be better place if we resolved paradigm-shifting, world-ending conflicts with glam rock. Also, sparklier.

No hide nor hair of the magical realism so far. I like it so far, but am uncertain the main couple are interesting enough to carry the narrative.

I am determined to give Hobb another chance, but her slower than molasses pacing makes it hard. Two hundred pages into a book about sentient ships and only like three of them spent sailing--dear lord, whyyyyyyyyyyy
