I'm glad it's over. What a cheap book and stupid characters. I will call it Summer of Sink-my-Sausage on Crapadoo Island.

I'm skimming a lot. I know where this is going, I know the spoiler. But I hate this kid, he is 100% trash, and I hope he never gets laid.

This book is going the right way to be re-named by me: Summer of Sinking my Sausage on Crapadoo Island. I hate these overhyped WWII stories, like From Here to Eternity, which I call Soldiers and Sluts on Crapadoo Island.

Very dated. So much flashing back it could possibly be called a period piece.

Book has 230 pages, I'm on 111.

Ughhh all the bothersome endnotes! The Biblical ones are unnecessary, the Shakespeare/Dante ones are unhelpful!

I'll say, his alcoholism was let go in the book way too long--page 162 before AA was called in. He even actually called it "booze" which is such a mid-century throwback I can't believe he used it. Someone square like Alex Keaton, yes, but not Michael J.

He's so loveable anyway, I'll just attribute it to his ghostwriter. Do NOT tell me there's no ghostwriter.

I just skipped the entire chapter that was in italics. Looked like it was a flashback, something about baseball when the kid was 9 years old. Looked boring, doubt there will be anything important I'll need to go back and read.

Dear God, this political stuff, it couldn't be more dry. Wish "old Crenny" would die already. I do foresee troubles for the German families around WWI if they don't quit lapsing into German. But that's 50 years away...

Slow-moving, not keeping characters straight very well, but they're starting to distinguish themselves. Very uncomfortable on page 15 with rapid-fire use of "nigger."

Slow-moving. Laura is sensible, level-headed, also patient and helpful. I respect her and trust her as narrator, but I don't really like her. I see with this glacial pace that she's destined to get together with Oliver Erskine, who they still haven't met yet. Laura herself seems very "meh" as a character. Emily, her brattish cousin, isn't any more likable but she's more fun to read about.

EVERY timnesomeone dies, why is there mention of how the coffin will be obtained, who's building it,etc.? Blah blah, blah, more Australian landscape, page after page with no dialogue and telling instead of showing.

Not sure about all this sturm-und-drang childhood stuff. Nuns are mean, head lice, rough boys messing with her doll. Is it really going to matter in her adult life?
