Can't decide if what Egan has captured through her characters is brilliant or cliched, but leaning toward the first, for how can the Upstate NY kids of college professor be so foreign yet a transplant from my own past?
Judgmental Miles, chameleon Ames, histrionic Alfred.

..."as opposed to some vaguely Anglo-American-sounding pseudonyms."

You mean like MissLexy or TheMooselet? 😱.
(Also, Goodreads, rude of you to limit my updates to 400 characters).

"The internet came of age with them. Like their own entrance into adulthood, it didn't happen overnight, but gradually, in a way that only seemed inevitable after the fact. There must have been a precise moment when knowing their way around Dreamweaver no longer constituted a hobby but a professional qualification, just as there must have been a first time they logged on to a website using their real names..."

10% in and holy shit, this is me if I'd been more of a creative type and had stuck to my web design origins instead of moving into sturdy old ERP. Or more accurately, this is my generation.

"'The pain we feel comes from them, not ourselves,' said the banners, and people cheered, certain of all the certainty. But the next day they'd wake up and find that what had hurt in them still hurt."

"Everyone in America seemed to be afraid and hurting and angry, starving for a fight they could win. And more than that even, they seemed certainties natural state was to be happy, contented, and rich. The genesis for everyone's pain had to be external, such was their certainty. And so legislators legislated, building border walls, barring citizens of there from entering here."

Mariana is reading Mating in Captivity: Reconciling the Erotic and the Domestic
Interesting take on the topic of sexuality in a long-term relationship.

Oh, Ms. Tartt, could you make this any sadder? Serious train wreck. If it weren't so well written...

I've read 700 pages in less than two weeks, even though I don't have time to read. That should tell you how much I'm loving this book.

Also, ever so rarely I read something that gets burnt into my brain and changes my view on the world. The interview with Sue Klebold --her grief, the wisdom in her pain-- was such a thing. I hope I get to be a better parent thanks to her hearbreak and her bravery.

Not a big fan so far, although in principle I agree with the thesis and have never understood the obsession with technology in the classroom. The studies are interesting but Mr. Spitzer clearly selects and freely interprets the results to follow his alarmist agenda. So far The Shallows seems a better, more nuanced take on the same topic.

Still not convinced by this one; the author seems to have stretched out what was enough for a long article into a book that is then half fluff.

So is it me, or is the book (the parts on poor Henrietta) the stuff of nightmares? After one horrible night I had to give up on reading it before bedtime.
