I definitely understand this better now than when I first read it. Maybe it was because I was so steeped in existentialist thought and the primacy of

I wasn't compelled by the arguments for vegetarianism (or if we want to be consistent, veganism) because I didn't understand what it might be like to take a non-anthropocentric position, why our reason alone cannot be the thing that distinguishes us from other things
