Huh. I’m a huge Stephen R Donaldson fan but I’m becoming concerned that this might not actually be very good!

Chris Farrell is starting Seventh Decimate (The Great God's War #1)
Just finished the prologue ... when it comes to genre fiction, Stephen R Donaldson really is the best.

I couldn't deal with the obvious bias of McMasters' book, and moved on to this instead, which I am quite enjoying so far.

Oh dear. The first two were fine pulpy reads but the quality is starting to take some serious hits with this one; compared to the first, it's about halfway to unreadable.

I seem to be on a bit of a procedural kick. It's been a while since I read Paretsky - wow, I had forgotten how good she is. Really engaging read.

After a pretty dreadful first half, things are thankfully picking up a bit as we actually go to sea on the nuclear submarine. Dan is starting to show some minimal competence at her job. Maybe things will look up.

Hmm ... do we really think the ideal investigative strategy is to piss off absolutely everyone you run into? I think the (male) author is trying too hard to make his female protagonist colorful and resorting to bad gender stereotypes. Kinsey Millhone or VI Warshowski would never have been this bull-headed.

"An orgiastic display of narcissism and gluttony that would make George R. R. Martin cringe." Best one-liner ever :)

I don't read that much sci-fi because so much of it is so terrible and I'm not really plugged into the culture enough to find the good stuff, but this got some really positive reviews so I thought I'd check it out. Seems promising so far!

My experience with alt-history fiction has been pretty bad, but I'm quite enjoying this one so far, after Jamelle Bouie recommended it on the Slate Political Gabfest.
