I'm noticing a lot of phrases where Paver uses a comma instead of a semicolon, and it's incredibly irritating. Has she always been doing this? I don't remember it being so prominent in her other novels.

So far so good, though Rin seems to be a tad too special even for a protagonist. A very, very minor nitpick is that I've spotted two references to photography and a recurrent use of modern colloquialisms, and they feel a bit jarring in a pre-industrial fantasy world.

So far, the book fails in all the ways the movie succeeds: it's dry, didactic, full of purple prose, and jumps so much all over the place that often you're not sure which person the author is talking about, or even what time period we're in.
Shetterly should be praised for collecting the data and the stories of these women, but she ain't really good at putting it down into a cohesive narrative.

I crack up at every mention of Linking books, particularly since Becky Chambers is apparently a Myst fan.

Uh, wow, OK. So that happened. What was the point of that character?

It's the far future. We have self-sustaining generation ships with 100% recycling capability including the dead, we have cleaner bots, we have sanitizer machines, we have artificial gravity... but we still don't have machines to do the dishes. Sure.

I'm reading a 60-page excerpt from the Hugo voter packet, so no, I didn't just breeze through 70 pages of essays.

I really wish there were transcripts of the letters and manuscripts though, most of the penmanship is really hard to read.
