Older romance books, for the most part, provide storylines and characters rich with depth. Moreso than current romance whoch jumps straight to the “action” with way less immersion. There isn’t as much physical romance thus far, but BOY, what a sad story being woven!

Zafon is such an enveloping transporting writer; the right amount of flourish before its poetry, and so much depth without bogging down plot.

I feel like American writers are so often in a rush to shove cheap candy in your mouth.....Zafon’s work is like a decadent cheesecake that you savor and go back for more depth and nuances.

A true crime unsolved child murder, in Victorian times written as if in that era. Author spends waaaay too much time discussing thoughts, novelists/novels etc about detectives of that era. Weighs down essential storyline so badly, you forgot what your reading by the time you get back to the case at hand.
Half way through book, and case is over... Will author spend 2nd half blathering more?

So far some of the characters are acting "out of character" from a Pride and Prejudice basis of who they are.... Not thrilled with that, but it seems the author is doing it as a means to an end (to further the plot as she desired) We'll see what happens
