My life got hectic and here I am 2 months later finally getting back to this book. I will admit the pacing wasn't as gripping as I thought it would be. I wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to get back to reading this. It's a Gaiman book though, so read it I absolutely will.

Neil Gaiman is the kind of writer that makes intros and ‘notes on the text’ somehow incredibly interesting. I once listened to him, one-by-one, give the back story to each short in a book of short stories. I feel like that section should have been at the end because I hadn’t read the shorts yet and therefore this information meant nothing to me- but I listened to him completely rapt. Wizard.

omg, why has it taken me this long to pick up a kindle??

I have never read a book on a Kindle before, but it doesn't look like it's available in print yet and I really just needed a cozy story to get me through having shingles. I will admit, compared to the enormous Inheritance trilogy brick featuring 3.5 books in one paperback, the kindle is quite sleek. I'm not fearing for my life if I accidentally fall asleep reading and the book lands on my face, for instance.

I enjoyed this journey.

I was not expecting to begin this book in the same universe but with an entirely new set of characters and I love it.

OK, so I'm going to pretend like my last garden themed book didn't happen and pick this one up instead. So far I'm appreciating the writing, which reads more like a garden journal than book. The quotes are nice and it's pretty short and sweet. I want to get back into my rotation of books via genre and this is a great, soothing start.

The writing repetition continues. She’s also obsessed with image and stereotypes— can’t imagine having a *poodle* or wearing an *orange hat* gasp! Perhaps I should consider this book was written 22 years ago, but we’ve come so far from this woman-kowtowing-to-grunting-men narrative it’s hard to go back. She’s also praising pioneers and omitting Indigenous people when talking of the land’s history, which tracks.
