wow this book is fucking DARK. but a wonderful remainder of how pleasurable straight historical narrative, even with all of its contingent facts and figures, can be. a wonderful reminder that man is wolf to man.

in a dualistic age, madness itself was bound to be understood dualistically. in an age of reason, it was not known what to do with the original error but set it aside as an object of study in its original abject state: a negative image of humanity. (something like that)
