On pg 73, the author states, “Boredom, said this Monsieur Barthes, is not far from bliss; one regards boredom from the shores of pleasure. Exactly so. The condition of the modern foetus. Just think: nothing to do but be and grow, where growing is hardly a conscious act. The joy of pure existence, the tedium of undifferentiated days.” Beautifully said!

Truong writes in a fantastical way, like she is omnipresent with the characters, potentially modeling as the characters, and keeping the reader at bay with her humble, yet princely writing. Truong knows she is a keeper of a secret, hidden life slowly revealed with every brush of ink

Transforming

V admirable 2 c Beryl xperience adversity as child growing ^ in underdeveloped & uncivilized Africa w her young father & disinterested mother. She’s able 2 overcome so many barriers & life lessons. But, love, is something else. It saddened me 2 see her marry so young while she was @ her peak industrious persona. Now she can only ever c love’s definition as fleeting, temporal, & everybody’s remedy 4 survival’s sake

Poor Emma deserves more than what the Doctor Charles Bovary has to offer..taken in as a peasant wife who he's encountered during his night call to the countryside to treat a broken bone belonging to her male relative. Oppression strikes Emma; as hues of a deep blue ocean obscure all signs of aquatic life, existing as a housewife. Will she ever abscond to her pleasures in light of a traveling and cheating spouse?
