Okay. Taking a breather now. I have already seen the movie. Why is this book still so stressful?

Just realised that I did not finish reading this because I went out to watch the movie. Correcting the problem now.

When you are brought up to believe that there is an answer to everything, it is hard to learn that some things have no answers. This book is eye-opening, but it is so difficult to read. Will be taking it slow.

Just started reading this today and already my heart is squeezed tight. I know a beautiful boy too, who messed with ecstasy. He was polite and soft-spoken, and he loved his mom and dad, and his mom and dad loves him back openly. They still do, yet...

I can't believe I didn't start reading this book from day one. I got it out of a sense of duty: as in, it's about Borneo, so I must read it. I just assumed it was just about the usual run-of-the-mill white men having an adventure in Borneo. Goodness, was I wrong. Loving it so far.

OMG. I want to die... This is not how I like to read... I don't want to write like this.... There is still 90% of the book I have to read.... Is it okay to retract my promise to myself about having to finish a book...

Currently re-reading this because I wanted to refresh my memory. I love it even more now because I am reading as a storyteller this time round. The dry fact-focused style of the narrator is quite hilarious at times but brutal at others.

Just starting to get use to the 'language' in this book. It is more interesting than I initially thought. A bit academic and dry, but the information is interesting. I did a double take when I read the first few pages because the words used seemed so communist. Yep, the writer is Malaysian & an UMNO politician.

I am deciding to stop reading this for now. The theories in the last 2 chapter is so pedestrian, I am bored. Maybe I will pick it up again after I've read all the other stuff.

The commentary on art and media is pretty depressing. Finally hit home that civilisation is an illusion. We are in Orwell's 1984. Just with more colour, flare and illusion of choice.

30 pages in, I went ("@ __ @") Is there a reason why these kind of books are gravitating towards me nowadays? Is the Universe trying to tell me something?
I really must stop flipping open new books before finishing one of the current ones I'm reading.

Freedom fighters in Laos and Vietnam have been around for generations, since before WWI. No wonder the US lost the war in Vietnam.

I suddenly had an image of John LeFevre's 'emergency' incident in a private jet (vividly described in 'Straight to Hell') while reading the chapter on capitalism.

Tickled that the French colonist in Vietnam were so misogynistic that they focused all their attention on male freedom fighters, which allowed the women to smuggle arms into conflict zones. They must have forgotten about Olympe de Gouges.

My heart is breaking right now, not because of the tragedy I know is coming for this story, but because of the writer's interpretation of the relationship between Achilles and Patroklos. Is nothing sacred anymore? Or have I misinterpreted Homer's Illiad?
