Ugh I love this novel

Mechanically the climactic moment works quite well, but Rowling flubs it a bit on the emotional level. Or maybe that's just because I knew what would happen.

It bothers me that all the other covers in this style are monochrome, while this isn't. Also, shocking to find random extra quotation marks in an ebook this popular.

Justine's story is without a doubt the most horrifying thing in the novel.

My first time reading the revised edition.

I'd remembered it was good, but forgotten exactly how captivating it is.

Ugh. I just.... Ugh.

Meh so far. The first chapters feels like a collection of "fun facts" (and very un-fun facts) loosely tied together in translated prose that is adequate but not breathtaking. The themes aren't subtle and fairly far from profound. Reminds me of "Orbital," another much-praised award-winner that I found almost entirely empty of any real substance.

I'll give it one more chapter, I think.

Shocking number of punctuation transcription errors in the NYRB ebook — they can't get the quotation marks to curl the right way.

Edith is an uncomfortable and bizarre character on so many levels.

Was prepared to dislike this but.... it's actually pretty amazing.
