This was his private world and almost nobody had access to it. It was by invite only, designed to be small and hidden away and only for him. I felt privileged to be here.

Because nothing—not the beautiful and not the terrible—lasts.

Because in life, you’re almost never aware when you’re living a last chapter.

Pity fades with age, hate is lost and found, but guilt can last a lifetime.

“Men and accountability,” she says. “They rarely go together.”

“I just needed to be okay, and I could do the wrong thing if it had the right end.”

Grace costs you nothing.

I love her, and she loves me. When our loved ones die, the love stays alive in the present.

Love is a promise. And promises you don’t keep are the worst lies of all.

Don’t you see? I can’t stand on my own if I’m always holding you up.

This constant flow means it’s a new River each time we cross, and we should honor the journey.

When someone dies, everything about them becomes past tense. Except for the grief. Grief stays in the present.

Leaving wasn’t weak, and it wasn’t giving up. It was brave and hard fought, a transition like any other, difficult and scary and probably necessary in the end. Fighting it only delayed the inevitable.

For the moment’s all there is, my darling.

Question yourself, yes, but don’t doubt yourself. There’s a difference.

She was still in charge. She was their mad queen, to whom they still all swore their lifelong allegiance.

Avoiding talking about things is much more dangerous than having conversations.

If I should fail, I commit to picking myself up and trying again.

Everyone’s got to have faith in something. No one knows all the answers to the universe’s questions, but I admire anyone who keeps looking up at the stars and asking them questions.

There’d been an anger in me that never burned quite strong enough to escape. It was stuck in my gut, embers that never died, even as layers of sadness and fear and whatever else got piled over it.

Death didn’t care about petty things like age.

“I always felt it would be easier to kill Michael as he slept than divorce him. Less paperwork, certainly.”

Do not mistake this—any of it—for kindness, Adeline. I simply want to be the one who breaks you.

I don’t know if I want her to settle down, Rose. I’m in awe of her fire. Even if I’m the one who gets burned. I just...want her to be happy.

People are messy, and love is ugly. I’m inclined to always err on the side of compassion.

It had never occurred to her before that her body was tense all the time. Relaxing it was hard, and it felt strange. It felt like a lot of work for something that was supposed to be natural.

Because you’re like a story that hasn’t happened yet. Because I want to see what you will do. I want to be part of the unfolding tale.
