This is the most exciting book I have read in ages.... and ages.......

Wow. What a story. The jungle environment is so vividly described ... and the occult activity sounds so.terrifyingly plausible.... so far I give it 5 out of 5...

Unsure ab this book. It reminds me of Gone Girl, with these stereotypical characters. The 8 y/o boy with the wisdom and insight of a Merlin really bothers me. Not sure if I want to devote my free time to this.

Something happened. A major clue and plot development .
Finally.

Well I am on page 158 and nothing much has happened since the murder. No clues, no interesting discoveries, nada.
The style of writing is somewhat annoying also.
If it doesn't improve by page 200 I am putting it down.

Mesmerising.... I cant stop thinking about this book even when I am not reading it!

Well, the settling is fascinating but nothing has happened yet. The characters themselves are not intriguing. I am hoping for a plot to develop. Isn't this supposed to be a 'thriller... reminiscent of Len Deighton'?

Very suspenseful in a low key sort of way. I feel so sad for P. And worried!

I generally love thrillers but i am stopping reading now.
The people in this book are just too destructive and self destructive for me. Its not entertaining just awful.

Love the book. I think it is hilarious. But the mai character Isaiah seems like a dud. A boring non event. Isnt he supposed to be a Sherlock-ian genius?

At first I was afraid it was a bland murder mystery light. But its quite intriguing w goid characters and.lots of local colour.

This book is captivating. I can't stop thinking about it.
I was in Beijing when I started reading it. I got maps out; read the blogs; did my own self guided tour of the area. Many of thr landmarks are gone or changed, but with imagination you can still picture how it must have been.

Part of me wants to read through the book. The other part of me wants to never finish it!

Fascinated already. I have read some mediocre books lately but this has me captivated amd also full of dread... what will happen?

Detailed research by the author is evident.
But I agree w other reviewers that this book would have benefited from some editing. Tooooooloooooooo many details and people ..
I have to skim through some sections or as they say 'it will do my head in'.

An exciting read.
Not great literature but good fun.
These books should be made into film's!!

well someone has ben murdered but Chen is not investigating the murder. only interesting part of book is about the beautiful Jiao.

well another book where nothing had happened. the slice of Chinese life is very interesting (esp since I am going therer in 1 1/2 weeks!) but ... Chen runs around talking to people and quoting poetry but no crime, no intrigue. ..
I want to go to those parties at the mansion in Shanghai though!

ok the plot is improving but this Reacher still seems like a cardboard macho parody

so far quite underwhelmed. It doesn't make sense that the US government would expend all this resources on an overheard whispered sentence.
also not impressed w Reacher. ok it's my first Reacher book but he seems lime a macho bully.

very slow moving.
technically not even a mystery yet as no one thinks that Mina was murdered!

suspension of disbelief only goes so far.
as a former social worker I am not buying how unprofessional Anne is. she blew off her dangerously unwell client Dennis bc she didn't want to leave Haley? she has no boundaries with this little girl. I cannot believe we are supposed to think this is a good thing. otherwise an interesting read.

agree with some of the other reviews that tooooo many side stories and vignettes. on one hand it's quirky a d charming but it's too confusing. who is Character Fg and do I even care? also I am worried about the kitten

If this book was written by a lesser author than Ruth Rendell, I would return it immediately to the library. The characters are all annoying. I dont like Wexfords old grumblings. But i am hoping tht she pulls it together in the end.

I am not keen on Louisa: she is quite obnoxious and hard to relate to. Other characters are not very interesting either. Local colour is good. I am giving it to page 200.

Magical Easier reading than Monsieur but not as captivating.
