I'm definitely getting more pulled into this than I expected! I love the characters and the writing style is wonderful. Only thing is that I wish there was a glossary. Braithwaite includes some Yoriba expressions and even though the meaning comes through in context, it would be cool to know what they actually mean; like, are they saying, "Hello, how are you today?" Or "Hey! what's up?"

This might end up as a DNF for me. The writing is good, and there are funny parts. I think as a woman, I'm supposed to feel some affinity for the FMC, but she reminds me of a conceited, overly precious person. Like someone who loves talking about awkward sexual encounters that no one cares about and then ends her story with, "Oh, I know, I'm just so naughty!" And it's like, "No, you're just predictable and tedious."

Honestly, great book so far but one thing bothers me and it's that the author seems to be from California and she's gotten some things weird about the area. Like the FMC has mentioned the ocean a few times and she grew up in Nebraska and then moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Sorry Samantha but that person living there is not going to use ocean metaphors for things. Or compare movement to kelp being pulled by the tide
