"Every story has its own taste. Every storyteller has her own taste; so does every listener. So when I speak in a particular flavor, I know my words taste differently on your tongue. While it is the ear that receives a story, the main event happens in the tongue repeating it...."

The second essay, Ur-Facism, lays out 14 characteristics of a Facist state. It is so depressing that the US is 14/14. Although Eco does present a bit of hope in that this is a historic cycle.

I was gifted this beautiful set of Discworld books at the holidays last year and so decided to start working through them again. I had planned to read through them slowly, but instead I finished #1 this morning and am jumping into #2 immediately. They are simply too much fun and a wonderful escape right now.

I read "Censorship and Silence" where Eco discusses censorship through silence but also through noise. On the one hand, these ideas on not new. On the other hand, he expresses so clearly that these types of censorship have occurred in the past, continue to occur at his writing, and definitely continues to this day. Very well-written, but also depressing. His solution doesn't seem attainable in this era.
