So far, 60+ pages in -- meh!! However, Inspector Gamache has just been introduced into the story, so hopefully it improves from here.

Nd is starting Stan and Ollie: The Roots of Comedy: The Double Life of Laurel and Hardy
Started on 9-3, am bogged down near the middle & setting it aside for a bit. Research is incredible, dissertation-quality speficity. I read about Louvish, who has based several biographies of early comedians on his investigtions, and this really does inform about the roots of comedy. The book proceeds chronologically, going back and forth between these comedians, and if anything is omitted, I can't imagine what it is

Nd is starting Betsy-Tacy (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition)
Someone I read recently cited three sets of books influential in her childhood. I loved Anne of Green Gables and Nancy Drew but had never heard of Betsy-Tacy, so I've checked out three. Just a chapter or two into this first one and am happy already.

Nd is starting Emotionally Weird: A Novel
I just as well mark, "I'm finished!" on this one. I slogged through 40-50 pages and today skimmed through another 50 or so. It's so disjointed, monotonous, and bland, I just can't care. Atkinson does have a vast vocabulary, which kept me going for a while, but there are too many interesting books out there to slog through one.

I loved The Haunted Monastery. Judge Dee, his three wives, his aide Tao Gan, and two coachmen were returning to Han-yuan from a holiday. As they drove through the high mountains in strong winds and pouring rain, an axle broke. Judge Dee, magistrate of the district, sent the coachmen to the only inhabited place in the area, the old Morning Cloud Monastery higher up the mountain.

When the library notified me that this book was in for me to check out I had just started McCarthy's Bar. I had barely gotten started when I learned that I couldn't renew because there are others waiting for it. I have it on hold again! In spite the lack of mystery, her writing style and depth of information were/are captivating,

Nd is starting Whistling Past the Graveyard
This is slow-go. I'm reading it with a weekly reading group and we've had to cancel twice. It's fun so far and has become suspensful, but this is way too slow a pace.

Reading with a book reading group, so it's going slowly, but not by choice. This week's part of the adventure was harrowing.

Still plugging along on this. In so saying, her writing is incredible. It's not difficult to read, just so in-depth and visionary that it takes some time to digest. I suppose I shouldn't feel as if I'm going slowly if I take into account that it's her lifetime of writing I'm trying to absorb.

Believe it or not, I am still reading this along the way. Lillian Smith is so far ahead of her time, and her thinking and writings are in such depth that I'm savoring one at a time here and there.

I didn't realized that I had read only bits and pieces of this in the past. It's absolutely lovely.

Late 1800s London. A brother, former fiancee, cousin who disappeared 11 years prior returns to reclaim his identity. Is he an impostor or the real fellow who, in fact, has not been dead all this time. His mother and brother say No. The former fiancee, now happily married with a child, thinks Yes as does his former nanny. Others aren't so sure, but those set to lose a lot try to prove him an impostor.
