Curious, prepared to be let down. I don’t think I feel strongly enough about the complexity or lack thereof in the characters.

I’m not loving a child POV. Or maybe a child narrating.

Down to just protag and surveyor? How is there 2/3 to go? Is anything gonna happen?

I need to listen to things a bit faster, like 1.75 - 2x but this narrator sounds like AI when I do.
It’s definitely impacting the vibes, having seen the film adaptation first I’m taking a bit to settle in and enjoy.

I don’t think I know enough about any of these players to care which one has the most plausible cause for villainism. Feels like an obvious outcome is shouting its way through

Kinda zooming through the reams of backstory/revisionist history to justify a plot point, like in place of character building?

Everything is ugly & despondent & it feels like the protag is completely unaware of his hypocrisy?
He’s unlikable, everyone he sees is unlikable, the world around him is unlikable. He has dreams & memories with sweetness that are made bitter by their distance from his reality.
Is he grieving or just conveniently dissociated enough to excuse the effort it takes to avoid looking at himself as an active contributor?

I don’t know what I think yet. Listening, if that matters.

Audio booking because the last book I was trying was such a slog my kindle has been dead for months. I’ve also switched back to knitting fixation. Nobody’s fault.
Anyway book, not much happening, not super exciting but not deterring.
I can’t hear “his gaze” “her gaze” without hearing “his gays” and picturing a bunch of twinks huddled supportively in the background. Boots that typewriter girl.

Things feel more interesting but I think it’s just bc the character/world building in a first in series novel is such a slog. I’ll admit I’m keen to pick it back up.

Things are happening I guess. I’m waiting to feel invested.

Just really miffed about having to invest emotional energy in getting to know new characters/storylines all the time but this is fine. Get it baby non vampire girly
