For years Shirley Jackson has been the sometimes companionable, often disturbing voice echoing in my head. What a pleasure to read such an astute analysis of her life and work. A book that centers not on her quirkiness but on her humanity. A book that does what a good literary biography ought to do - makes you want to revisit all the original works again. Glad to see Ms. Jackson given the serious attention she deserv

Perhaps the sad day will come when Dan Rhodes will no longer make me embarrass myself by guffawing on trains. In the meantime, people continue to give me odd looks.
