For years Shirley Jackson has been the sometimes companionable, often disturbing voice echoing in my head. What a pleasure to read such an astute analysis of her life and work. A book that centers not on her quirkiness but on her humanity. A book that does what a good literary biography ought to do - makes you want to revisit all the original works again.
