I'm a little worried about being a third in and being introduced to so many characters. Hopefully having so many perspectives is helpful.

Bit of an odd time to bust out the encyclopedia but I appreciate the whale lesson Herman.

This book is funny! Did not expect that. Ishmael is not so objective or separated from the story because he talks to the reader which is something I've been told is a faux pas in writing >:( even though it works great here. When something weird happens it is nice that Ishmael starts it off with something like 'you wouldn't believe me, but its' true!'. Makes him feel like an actual person.

Went to a book club on this and I don't feel bad about going before it's over because I feel like this could stop at any point or just go on forever so spoilers don't really matter here.

If this is going to continue to be this dreamlike magical-realism story, I could do with less """romance""" involving children. I can tell that family is a big part of this and this convoluted family tree will probably get even worse but it is pretty off-putting so far. When seemingly anything can happen in this world, I am really wondering why the author is choosing to write SO much about that.

First time reading... magical realism I think you'd call this? It is certainly odd! I thought it would be hard to follow at first but I am certainly engaged.

It's picked up! I do think not knowing any Spanish hurts my understanding and flow of reading though.

This is getting a little slow
