i'm rereading this in an attempt to cure a brutal reading slump.... and to see what i think of it 12 years later....

how dare i lose sight of the fact that i owe gratitude to many despicable oligarchs for the existence of most of my favorite institutions.... big sigh but the truth cannot be denied

Only 42 pages in and I've already learned so much incredible NYC history that I knew nothing of. Seeing all that went into the planning of the museum from the moment Albert S. Bickmore, the founder, had the idea of establishing a natural history museum in NYC in 1861, till the long-awaited opening in 1877 is incredible.
