I didn't realize how much reading aloud to someone would slow me down, but as it's a person who doesn't really read, I guess I'm happy to share a story they wouldn't get otherwise…

The main female lead actually says,"What was he going to do with me?" Why are her female leads always so weak?They never have a spine, & always rely on men to save them, both in their heads & in their actions. I know these were written in the '70's & '80's, but my mother, who was 15 when I was born, lied about her age (this was in '74) so she could work in a steel plant. She was one of only 2 women in the whole place

This is only my second Mary Higgins Clark book (that I remember, I may have read more back in the '90's), but are all her female characters so pathetic? I find myself wanting to slap Nancy in "Where are the Children?" I have a suspicion there's a reason for her weakness, but even so, I do not relate to the two main characters I've read so far…
