Really sympathetic take on auto immune diseases. It’s always nice to see someone acknowledge that getting **** from doctors really compounds the suffering.

A bit disorganized so far.

Soooo…is this just ‘young woman discovers she’s in a cult [outer space edition]’? The writing is fine, but I’m already guessing there’s going to be a big reveal later that the [redacted] actually weren’t the ones who [redacted].

Welp. It can’t end well, but that’s not what we’re here for.

Okay. Dani is recognizing that MC’s mom is not being a great mom. I feel slightly better.

I’m reading this with my kid and so far it’s DEEPLY uncomfortable. The MC clearly has a strong anxiety disorder (or something similar) and her mom literally laughs it off. She’s terrified of cats and her mom forgot. And now the step sister seems to have an unhealthy dynamic with the step mom? We’ve had to pause reading several times for me to tell my kid ‘adults should not treat kids like this. Ever.’

One of the weaknesses of grimdark is that the reader learns that ANY flicker of joy will quickly meet a tsunami of horror, pain, and loss. Ultimately it softens the edges of both the bright and the dark.
