So far, I’m enjoying the courtroom scenes. I was interested in learning about the Japanese experience during this time. But there’s a lot of boring descriptions of trees and nature that I’m struggling to get through in between the other 2 categories. I haven’t found the characters of Hatsue or Ishmael to be very compelling. Seems to be a large cast of minor characters who might be more interesting!

I abandoned this book a long time ago. With new resolve to get through and/or discard unloved books, I began again. I don’t dislike it as much as I did and I’ll be able to finish it in a few days. However it is still not a book I would recommend. It’s one of those “not quite” books. It’s not quite funny, nor sad, nor enlightening enough to make an impact. Decent idea, just falls short on execution.

I am giving up on page 125. This is the 2nd time I have attempted to read it through. I just can’t. It is simply a horrible, pointless, unreadable book.
