Have to remind myself this book was translated from Japanese. But the sexist views of 1990's Japan are a bit hard to swallow. E.g., "Housewives were susceptible to the 'matter of life and death' ploy. Whenever he needed to save time and get one moving [the housewife, that is] he found that the phrase had just the right impact." Try saying that these days!
