This novel illustrates how war disrupts families. It also demonstrates how Ukraine has been abused by the Soviets, the Nazis and for a time, their neighbors, the Poles. The spirit and strength of the families in this beautiful story are remarkable.

A courageous story that demonstrates how determination and creative strategy can overcome terrible odds and lead to victory. The series would make an excellent movie.
War is bloody and violent, but Finland did not want to be invaded and this novel demonstrates the weakness of the Soviet army: lots of ammo, but poor leadership and inadequate food supplies for their troops. This situation is repeated in Ukraine.

While this book and the series are violent, the author paints an honest picture of war. With so few troops and resources
the Finns use intelligence, craftiness and skill to out maneuver the Soviets. Any one who loves history, especially military history will enjoy this story. Freedom is not free.
