Getting ready for another run at the 28 reads in 28 days thing I tried last year. This time I have 28 short stories, free to read online, already picked out and the links collected in a list-- hopefully that takes care of any decision fatigue in advance, lol.

this feels like a partner book to metal from heaven, it's much MUCH less queer, but it's not aggressively straight either, and it's labeled as LGBT by goodreads so i'm guessing more is coming lol. it's definitely reminiscent of firefly in places (complimentary). and mag has thankfully gotten much more agency, i'm really liking her character now.

similes and metaphors are supposed to make things MORE relatable by comparing them to something you're familiar with. this sentence is poetic but doesn't make any damn sense.

my updates have mostly been critical so far but this is actually pretty good-- the bits with the monsters, and the possibly sinister dickhead teacher, are VERY good, it's just the parts where it begins to wallow in andrew's feelings that it strains credibility. also i really like both andrew's sister and her queer friend, and even the school bully feels like a realistic teenager, not evil, just kind of an asshole.

unclear why i'm supposed to believe teens at a high-pressure boarding school are THIS on fire about a kid punching a mirror one time. half these kids have prob seen and done worse-- like i believe it was a topic of gossip when it happened, but them acting like he's dangerous and scary months later, after summer break? idk. there's plenty of reasons andrew would feel alienated/isolated, this feels overdramatic.

i always kind of roll my eyes when teenagers, especially queer boys, are described with this kind of fey delicacy, like any seventeen year old is writing little fairy tales for his crush and hoping he somehow doesn't have the reading comprehension to understand it's a declaration of feeling?? idk. plot has me hooked though.

also as a queer person i maintain that ali staying hung up on horrible donna her whole life is just as much of a tragedy as arthur and gwen's separation. girl you deserved so much better.

i was curious how Keane would go about making Mary relatable-- how she could make the reader understand Mary's insistence on returning to her work after she'd made so many people sick-- but she's doing a great job. the idea of an asymptomatic carrier was crazy for its time, pure fantasy, so Mary feeling persecuted and determined to prove her innocence seems totally reasonable.

this is very well written but kind of bleak - I'm going to keep on with it but oof it's a lot.
